Controller – Real Estate Development & Construction

Rush Development Company, a Gig Harbor based property development company seeks to fill the position of Controller.  The Controller is primarily responsible and accountable for the completion of all procedures relating to the preparation, publication and distribution of financial statements.  This position must also coordinate with the Rush Companies’ external accountant in the preparation of all tax returns.  The Controller will maintain all accounting procedures and policies through the direction of staff activities.  The position is exposed to a large volume of companies and transactions and is primarily responsible for the accurate representation of the financial position of all Rush Companies and related entities.  The incumbent in this position is required to be accurate, highly organized, detail-oriented and task driven.

The position is charged with the following:

  • Financial Statement preparation and/or review
  • Tax package preparation for external accountant, and review
  • Internal audit (accounting control)
  • Cash Management
  • Clearing account (monthly)
  • Administration of Capital Accounts
  • Job Recaps
  • Job Setup
  • Reconciles Job Cost to General Ledger
  • Reconciles Accounts Receivable to General Ledger
  • Reconciles Accounts Payable to General Ledger
  • Backup - all areas

Responsibilities include:

  • Day-to-day operations, maintenance and tactical development of the Accounting Department policy and procedures. 
  • Training and mentoring of team members, staff review, development and discipline (within company guidelines). 
  • Reconciliation of GL accounts to sub-ledgers, monthly close, report-writing, and cash management. 
  • Maintenance of customer records, files, data, electronic files and data, and other pertinent business documentation. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Customer Service:  To maintain a level of service and strike a suitable balance between service and enforcement.  The department leader should try to establish that they are there to work with the customer to achieve a common goal.  Customers are both internal and external.
  • A/R: The Controller supervises the AR and Billing Specialist, who ensures AR is in balance, the aged AR is within tolerance, cash is posted in a timely manner, and all billings are completed, posted and delivered in a timely fashion.
  • A/P:  The Controller supervises AP Department.  The AP Department ensures AP is in balance, the aged AP is within tolerance, and cash disbursals are controlled within company guidelines
  • The Controller should be able to participate in and identify areas for improvement. This person should be able to understand, plan and implement change or lead projects to completion, as necessary.

The duties and responsibilities are not comprehensive and, as with all positions at the Rush Companies, the position and its responsibilities may change over time or as business necessitates.

Qualification Requirements: To perform this job successfully, you must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.  A working knowledge of Timberline Accounting Software (Sage) is preferred. An extensive knowledge of both Excel and Word are required.

Education and/or Experience: A Bachelor’s degree in a financial discipline is preferred but not required.  Candidate should have 5-7 years experience in corporate accounting (preferably in a job costing environment), as an accounting manager, Assistant Controller or Controller.  Supervisory experience is required.  CPA, CMA or other professional accounting designation is desirable.                                                                                                                                                           

Language Skills: The ideal candidate must possess good verbal and written communications skills and must be able to express himself/herself clearly and decisively both to accounting professionals and non-accountants. 

Mathematical Skills: Proficiency in arithmetic functions. 

Reasoning Ability: The Controller must be able to make objective, fact-based decisions on accounting policy and cash management issues and must be able to prioritize work schedule and time.  The position requires a creative, resourceful thought process.  The ideal candidate will be able to make measured and deliberate decisions under difficult, time-pressured circumstances.

Physical Demands: The physical demands of this job are consistent with a clerical type position.  Ability to lift boxes up to 25 pounds.

Work Environment: The work environment is professional; dress is business casual.  Office hours are from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM PST, Monday through Friday.
